Not everyone knows this, but Serenity was based on a SciFi Channel TV series called Firefly (Serenity was the name of their spaceship on the show). It was a great show and the only one I'm aware of to have ever successfully combined two great genres that are almost exact polar opposites--SciFi and Western, but it only lasted half a season (14 episodes). It had such a cult following, however, that they made this movie. It wasn't widely advertised, cuz they wanted as many people as possible to go see it without thinking they'd have had to have watched the Firefly series to know what's going on. And while that's basicly true, the movie can be enjoyed without ever having heard of the series, this movie actually picks up right where the first season ended. So if you haven't seen it yet, I'd reccomend watching the first season of Firefly before watching the movie. And if you've already seen it & liked it, then you would enjoy the series as well. Plot Outline:
Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family--squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers--a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister--he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself.
